Shota Nakano



Shota Nakano was born in Tsukuba in 1984. He began studying the piano at the age of 5 with Hiroko Edo and Alexander Mndoyants. In 1996 he earned the First National Prize for elementary school students and the Nomura Prize in the Japan National Student Music Competition. During a concert at the Japanese Embassy in Washington his play was highly praised by Leonard Slatkin.
He has played with various orchestras, including NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra d'ArchiItaliana and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under leading conductors such as Mustislav Rostropovich, Charles Dutoit, Matthias Barmert and Seiji Ozawa.
In the United States he gives numerous recitals, orchestra and radio concerts of WXQR. Recently, he gave several recitals in major cities in Japan including Tokyo and Nagoya and performed in the finale concert of the 24th Tokyo Summer Festival where he performed chamber music including the piano duo with a Jazz pianist Takashi Matsunaga. In 2009, he got the master’s degree at the Juilliard School where he studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky.
In 2010, he played “America Remix”, composed by Takashi Yoshimatsu, with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sachio Fujioka as the world premiere , and appeared in the subscription concert of Japan Century Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Dmitriev.
In 2011, Shota Nakano appeared with Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ken-ichiro Kobayashi, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra with Sachio Fujioka and appeared in Sendai Classical Musicl Festival for the first time.
Both of the CDs, "Schumann's piano concerto" and "Manhattan - SHOTA plays Gershwin", released by Octavia Records, have received honorary prize for the excellence of recording and the best recording of the month by Record Geijutsu.
In June 2014, he played with NHK symphony orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Conductor Laureate of the orchestra.His rich expression and the transparency of his sound made a quite high reputation by the audiences.
The new CD, "La Valse -Ravel&Corigliano: Piano pieces",including the piano solo version of La Valse, Jeux d'eau and Gaspard de la Nuit, was released in late June of 2014.
He is a recipient of the 15th Idemitsu Music Prize in 2005.
