Biography

Takaoki Onishi, a graduate of Musashino Academia Musicae, was the inaugural winner of the IFAC-Juilliard Prize Singing Competition in Japan, which granted him a full scholarship to the Juilliard School.

At Juilliard, Mr. Onishi sang leading roles in many productions including LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, EUGENE ONEGIN and ST. MATTHEW PASSION.

As a winner of the 2012 Juilliard Honors Recital competition, he made his American recital debut at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. He received Juilliard’s Florence and Paul DeRosa Prize and the Novick Career Advancement Grant at graduation.

Mr. Onishi’s other awards include first prize in the Student Music Concours of Japan, the Gold Prize and Baritone Special Prize in the Concorso di Lirica Italiana, and the Top Prize in New York’s Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition. He also holds first prize honors from the Opera Index, Inc. Vocal Competition, the Licia Albanese-Puccini International Vocal Competition, and the 2015 Giulio Gari Competition. Most recently, he was selected as a Finalist in the Montreal International Music Competition.

In the 2015-16 season, Mr. Onishi joined the prestigious Ryan Opera Center Ensemble of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He made his mainstage debut with the company creating the role of Father Arguedas in the world premiere of BEL CANTO; his performance was praised by the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. The production was filmed and broadcast on PBS’ Great Performances series in January 2017. He returned to the Lyric Opera in the 2016-17 season to sing in EUGENE ONEGIN, CARMEN, and the Placido Domingo Gala Concert. Mr. Onishi’s recent work outside of Chicago has included his Carnegie Hall debut as the baritone soloist in Vaughan Williams' HODIE with The Cecilia Chorus, CARMINA BURANA with the Oratorio Society of New York, and performances with the Nurnberg Symphony Orchestra and Munich Radio Orchestra in Europe. He has also participated in the Georg Solti Accademia in Italy, the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Germany, and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

Mr. Onishi’s appearances in Japan include Beethoven 9 in various venues, CARMINA BURANA with Norichika Iimori, and EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM with Junichi Hirokami. He has also performed DON GIOVANNI, COSI FAN TUTTE, and DIE SCHÖPFUNG.

Mr. Onishi’s career is gaining international recognition.
