Renowne d worldwide for his musical integrity and effortless vi rtuosit y,German-Frenc h cellist Nicola s Altstaedt is one of the most sought after and versatile artists toda y. As a soloist and conductor, he enthralls audiences with repe rtoire spanni ng from the baroque to the contemporary.

At the beginning at the 17/18 season he is going to perform the Finnish Premiere of Esa -Pekka Salonen's new cello concerto under the bat on of the composer at the Helsinki Festival, and returning to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Santtu-Matias R ouvali for the Dutch premiere. He will be Artist in Spotlight at the Concertgebouw in 17/18 and Artist in Resi dence 18/19 at the NDR Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, where he will perf orm wit h Krzysztof Urbanski, Sakari Oramo and Thomas Hengelbrock on tour. Late r on, he will be touring major European venues with the SWR Orc hestra with Teodor Currentzis, the BBC SSO with Thoma s Dausgaard, La C hambre Phi lha rmoni que with Emanuel Krivine and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Furt her engagements include debut pe rformances at t he Detroitand Indianapoli s Symphony Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony in SuntoryHall, Helsinki Philharmonic, Konze rthaus Orchestra Be rli n with Juraj Valcuha, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Orche st re National de Belgique, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and Les Violins du Roy.

Awarded the C redit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2010, he ga ve a highly acclaime d performance of the Schumann concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festi val. Si nce then he has pe rformed worldwi de wit h orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Finnish Radio Symphony Orc hestra, Czech Philha rmonic, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Met ropolita n Symphony Orc hestra, Melbourne and Ne w Zealand Symphony Orchestras working with conductors like Sir R oger Norrington, Andrew Ma nze, Lahav Shani, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Neville Marrine r, Vladimir Fedosseev, Leif Se gerstam, Dmitri Slobodeniouk, Alexander Shelley, Fabien Ga bel, Joshua Weilerstein, Gusta vo Gime no, Giovanni Antoni ni and Andrea Marcon amongst many others. In recital, Nicolas performs sol o and with partners Fazil Say and Alexander Lonquich. He will tour both Europe and the US and will visit Istanbul, London Wi gmore Hall, Boza r, Tonhal le Zurich, Koerner Hall Toronto, Theatre des C hamps-Elysées, Amsterdam Concertge bouw and New York Carnegie Hal l amongst others.

In Autumn 17 Nicolas will tour Australia extensi vely as part of a Musica Viva Recital tour with Aleksandar Madzar.

As a chamber musician, Nicolas regularly plays with Ja ni ne Jansen, Vilde Frang, Andreas Ottensamer, Pekka Kuusi sto, Antoine Tamesti t, Lawrence Powe r, Jonathan Cohen and the Quatuor Ébène perf orming at Salzburg Mozart and Summer Festi val, Verbier, Utrecht, BBC Proms, Luce rne, Gstaad, Musikfest Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, Rheingau and Stavanger. In 2012 Nicolas was chosen by Gidon Kremer to become his successor as the new artistic director of t he Lockenha us Chamber Music Festival and in 2014, Adam Fischer asked him to follow in his footsteps as Arti stic Director of t he Haydn Philha rmonie, with whom he re gularly performs at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Esterházy Festival and will tour both China and Japan in the next season.

Nicolas premieres new music and performs with composers like Thoma s Ades, Jörg Widmann, Thomas Larcher, Matthias Pintsche r, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and Fazil Say. He has commissioned the pianist/composer Hauschka as part of this season as Artist ic Director of “ Viva Cello” Fe stival in Liestal in 2016 inspired by a film sc ript by Federico Fellini as well compose rs Sebastian Fagerl und, Thomas Larcher, Bryce Dessner and Helena Winkelman for new cello concertos. Nicolas' recent recording of CPE Bach Concertos on Hyperion with Arcange lo and Jonathan Cohen receive d the BBC Music Magazine Concerto Awa rd 2017. This year, he released a Recital CD with Fazil Sa y on Warner Classics. Previous recordings of cello conce rti by Ha ydn, Schumann, Li geti, Shostakovich and Weinberg have been acclaimed worldwide. Nicolas Altstaedt was a BBC New Generat ion Artist 2010-2012 and a recipient of the “Borletti Buitoni Trust Fellowship” in 2009. He pla ys a Giulio Cesare Gigli cello, Rome around 1760.
