ProfileProfile

Internationally acclaimed pianist Yukio Yokoyama became the youngest Japanese prizewinner in history at the International Chopin Piano Competition at the age of nineteen—a record that remains unbroken. Since his sensational debut, he has established himself as one of Japan’s leading pianists, performing widely in Japan and internationally. In 2026, he celebrates the 35th anniversary of his debut.

Renowned for his extraordinary artistic vision and stamina, Yokoyama has undertaken landmark projects including the internationally acclaimed “Chopin: A Soulful Journey”, a 14-hour marathon performance of all of Chopin’s solo piano works in 2010 to mark the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth. In 2020, celebrating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, he achieved another remarkable milestone by performing all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas over the course of two days—a feat rarely matched anywhere in the world.

His signature concert series, “Chopin: A Soulful Journey” and “Beethoven Plus”, explore both the historical context of the works and the lives of the composers, captivating audiences and earning high acclaim throughout Japan.

A highly respected educator, Yokoyama guided the internationally renowned blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii from junior high through his success at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and debut, and has nurtured numerous other international prizewinners.

Beyond the piano, Yokoyama is also active as a composer and conductor. Appointed Friend of ACO by the Aichi Chamber Orchestra, he frequently appears as both conductor and pianist-conductor, bringing the same meticulous insight and musical depth that define his performing career.

At his private Biancara Salon, he presents monthly salon concerts and livestream recitals titled My Heart Piano Live, offering audiences an intimate experience distinct from the concert hall. In 2025, he released his latest CD, Ravel: Complete Works for Piano Solo (2-CD set).
