Akemi Sakamoto received her undergraduate education and a master’s degree in opera from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and Conservatorio Statale di Musica “Giuseppe Verdi.”
In 1991 Sakamoto took the top prizes at the “Toti dal Monte” competition held in Treviso (Italy) and the “Bellini” International Competition. In 1992 she took 3rd Prize at the Francisco Vinas competition, and received praise for her performance at the Belvedere International Singing Competition.In 1995 she gave an impressive performance at the Placido Domingo World Opera Competition (Operalia).

Sakamoto has given striking performances in the roloes of Fenena in “Nabucco” ,Rosina in “The Barber of Seville” ,the title role in “Carmen” , ,Belsi in “Andrea Chenier”, Preziosilla in “La Forza del Destino”, Azucena in “Il Trovatore”, and Suzuki in “Madama Butterfly”. Chikara Oishi in Shigeaki Saegusa’ “Chushingura” ,Princess Yamato in a performance of “Takeru” held to commemorate the opening of the New National Theatre Tokyo Nesan in “Kurofune”, and Marchioness Kiko in “Rokumeikan”,
Sakamoto also performs frequently with orchestras. She performed Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky” with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the baton of Mo. Temirkanov; Mahler’s 3rd Symphony with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mo. Hornec; Janacek’s opera “Glagolitic Mass” with the same orchestra and conductor; Schoenberg’s “Gurrelieder” with the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with the EU Youth Orchestra conducted by Mo. Ashkenazy, Mo.Kazushi Ohno and the Japan premiere of “Nagasaki” with the Yomiuri Symphony under the baton of Mr. Rojdestvensky and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony under the baton of Mo.Maazel.
Akemi Sakamoto is based in Italy and Japan and gives many concerts throughout both countries. She has become increasingly active in church music performance, giving numerous concerts in churches with pipe organs. As one of Japan’s most outstanding and sought after mezzo-sopranos, she is active in a wide range of projects.
She released a CD “Liberté” of complete 21 songs written by Takemitsu recorded with a guitarist, Shin-ichi Fukuda in the autumn of 2010.
