In Memory of Yuri Grigorovich
The great ballet maestro and choreographer Yuri Grigorovich has passed away.
Born in Saint Petersburg, Yuri Grigorovich was a soloist with the Kirov Ballet (now the Mariinsky Ballet) before serving as the Kirov’s ballet master from 1962 to 1964. He subsequently held the post of artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet for three decades, from 1964 to 1995, as well as other important positions. As a choreographer, Mr. Grigorovich gave the world new productions of classic ballets, as well as new works, which could be called monumental works of Russian ballet. His devotion to art conveyed the true spirit of the dance and created a splendid era of Russian ballet.
In Japan, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Mariinsky Ballet performed many of Mr. Grigorovich’s signature works on their Japan tours and other occasions. These works include “Swan Lake,” “The Nutcracker,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” “Giselle,” “The Golden Age,” “Spartacus,” “Bayaderka (La Bayadère),” “Raymonda,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Legend of Love.”
We would like to commemorate the life of Yuri Grigorovich and express our sincere condolences on his passing.
