In 1993 Domonkos Héja founded the Danubia Youth Symphony Orchestra which he is heading till today and which he conducted at numerous tours in Europe as well as at prestigious festivals like Young.Euro.Classic Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Europa Kulturtage in Frankfurt/Main, Como Autumn, Lisztomanias Chateauroux France and Toblacher Mahler Festival.
In February 2005 he recorded for Warner Music the second CD with the Danubia Symphony with works of the Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi.
Domonkos Héja gave his opera debut with La Bohème at Budapest Opera House in 2001 and he has been regularly guest there. He has conducted Turandot, Traviata, Rigoletto, Pique Dame and Lady Macbeth of Mzensk there. In 2002 he successfully presented Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartók with Budapest Opera both in Florence and Rome. In spring 2009 he gave his debut with a performance of Don Carlos at the opera house in Halle.
In 2004 he gave his debut with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, in January and March 2005 he conducted at the Chemnitz Theatre the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie ? and he was immediately appointed First Kapellmeister at the Opera House Chemnitz. In addition to concerts Domonkos Héja conducted operas like The Flying Dutchman, Idomeneo, The Magic Flute, Le nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, Aida, The Love for Three Oranges as well as theballets Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella there, to mention only a few. In October 2009 he conducted the premieres of the operas The Barber of Seville and Rusalka.
In 2003 Domonkos Héja was awarded the Ferenc Liszt Prize, in 2005 the Artisjus Price for the interpretation of contemporary Hungarian music and moreover the László Lajtha Prize in 2006.
After a production with the MDR-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig in autumn 2007 (Dohnányi Symphony No. 1) Domonkos Héja followed a reinvitation of the orchestra in April 2008. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the first broadcast RIAS stellt vor (RIAS presents) Deutschlandradio and the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin arranged a jubilee concert with selected artists on November 03, 2009 ? with Domonkos Héja among them.
