ProfileProfile

Yuki Ito was born in Tokyo and moved to London at the age of 15. Three years later he made his first recital tour in Croatia. Whilst studying at the Royal College of Music, he won 1st prize at both the International Brahms Competition in Austria and the UK’s most prestigious Windsor Festival International String Competition, which led him to commence an international career.
He has since internationally appeared with major orchestras as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Kärntner Sinfonieorchester, Slovenian Armed Forces Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Tokyo Symphony and Osaka Philharmonic Orchestras, and has regularly given recitals around the globe at venues like London’s Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, including a private recital personally invited by HRH the Prince Edward.
He is widely known as specialist of Rachmaninoff’s works, demonstrated in such achievements as releasing his world-wide debut album “Rachmaninoff Complete Cello Works” in 2012 and publishing a monograph book “Thoughts on Rachmaninoff” in 2023, to mention a few. That same year he gave a recital commemorating Rachmaninoff’s 150th birth anniversary, where he was privileged to use the surviving piano owned by Rachmaninoff for collaboration, showcasing it for the first time in history in duo form.
He has collaborated with many esteemed artists. In May 2024 he will release his first concerto album, including works dedicated to him by the world-renowned composer Johan de Meij, with maestro de Meij himself on the podium. In 2016 he performed “Song of the Birds” with a string ensemble specially formed for a day under the late Seiji Ozawa, and, in 2022, he played for maestro Ozawa’s last performance as a member of his Saito Kinen Orchestra.
Having been active also as conductor, Yuki Ito founded the Knightsbridge Orchestra in London in 2013 and made his conducting debut at St Martin-in-the-Fields that year, with the distinguished cellist Julian Lloyd Webber as soloist. He also led the initial Japan tour of Camerata Luanda of Republic of Angola to success in 2016, a historical event which marked the first tour in Japan ever by an African orchestra.
He has internationally given masterclasses at conservatoires including the Royal College of Music and Ljubljana Academy of Music, as well as serving as adjudicator at FLAME Competition in Paris.
He was awarded the Hideo Saito Memorial Award in 2019, one of the most honourable music awards in Japan, for his service to music.
